An overview of contributions from the Chair to different curricula at The Hague University of Applied Sciences
September 2024 - Public event on the role of the Digital Services act in European democracy
During this public event, Mendeltje van Keulen and Diederik Brink (lecturer at The Hague University of Applied Sciences) debated what are some of the dangers posed to democracy from two points of view: Diederik presented the American perspective and connected it with the US elections, whereas Mendeltje presented the European perspective. The effect of disinformation on digital platforms was discussed, starting a further debate on the impact of the Digital Services Act.
September 2024 - Lecture in the 'Advanced Research Skills' course
Dr. Mendeltje van Keulen provided a lecture to students at The Hague University of Applied Sciences for the subject “Advanced Research Skills”, about how to conduct a research assignment, strengthening the students’ applied research skills and educating them on how to conduct applied research in a real-life situation. The research group European Impact was the assignment provider, with the assignment focusing on EU Digital Policy.
July 2024 - Lecture in the 'Managing Organisations in the EU' course
Upon invitation by the Chair, Bart Groothuis (member of European Parliament on behalf of Renew Europe), attended a public conference at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. The focus of his contribution was on Cyber Security initiatives in Europe.
July 2024 - Guests lecture in the 'Challenges to EU Governance' minor
Upon invitation by the Chair, Sandra Leenders, EU advisor of the Digital Affairs Committee of the Dutch House of Representatives, gave a guest lecture for the Challenges to EU Governance minor. During the lecture, she discussed what her role as an EU advisor entails (e.g. providing advice a bout specific instruments, giving alerts about important developments about an EU topic, etc.). She also delved into what the role of the Digital Affairs Committee in the Dutch House of Representatives is and how to go about monitoring the government’s involvement in European Negotiations.
June 2024 - Public conference with guest Bart Groothuis (Member of European Parliament)
Upon invitation by the Chair, Bart Groothuis (member of European Parliament on behalf of Renew Europe), attended a public conference at The Hague University of Applied Sciences. The focus of his contribution was on Cyber Security initiatives in Europe.
May 2024 - Guests lecture in the 'Challenges to EU Governance' minor
Upon invitation by the Chair, Witte Wijsmuller (Policy Assistant to the Director General at DG CONNECT in the European Commission) gave a guest lecture for the Challenges to European minors. During his guest lecture, Wijsmuller explained the role of DG Connect and its role in ensuring that Europe is “fit for the digital age”. He also touched upon EU investments in digital technologies, such as those via the Digital Europe Platform. Furthermore, he also discussed with the students specific pieces of EU digital policy, such as Cyber Skills Academy, the European Cyber Security Alarm System and the Cyber Solidarity Act. Wijsmuller also shared about different career paths and the impact that one can have on EU digital policy.
